Most wanted new MIST cores (possible poll)

Postby RobertK » Tue Oct 04, 2016 2:35 pm

[EDIT 2016-10-10: polls have been created.]

Maybe we can make a poll to let the core authors know what systems the MIST owners would like to see next?

Please do not "vote" now, this is just meant to be a discussion for an oncoming poll.

Here is a list [EDIT 2016-10-10: list extended] of not yet implemented, but IMHO "relevant" machines (in alphabetical order):

- Acorn Electron
- Apple I
- Apple IIGS
- Arcade Systems (various)
- Atari 7800
- Commodore 128
- Commodore 65
- Commodore PET / CBM-II
- CP/M Machines (e.g. Grant Searle's "Multicomp", Amstrad PCW8512 / Schneider Joyce, Amstrad PCW9512, Amstrad PCW16, Casio FP-1100, PC1715 from East Germany)
- Cray supercomputer
- Dragon 32
- Enterprise 128
- IBM PC/XT (4.77 MHz 8088 or 8086, maybe with an 8 MHz "Turbo switch") with CGA/EGA/Hercules graphics
- Interton VC 4000 / Hanimex HMG 1292/1392 (and other 1292-based consoles)
- Jupiter Ace
- Mattel Intellivision
- Memotech MTX512
- NEC PC series (PC-8000 to PC-9800)
- NEC SuperGrafx
- Nintendo SNES
- Oric 1 / Atmos
- Robotron computers (various, East Germany)
- Sega Genesis / Mega Drive
- Sega SG-1000
- Sharp MZ-700
- Sharp X68000
- Sinclair ZX-80
- Soviet computers (various, e.g. UKNC)
- Tandy TRS-80 Color Computer 1/2
- Tandy TRS-80 Color Computer 3
- Tandy TRS-80 MC-10 / Matra Alice
- Tandy TRS-80 Model I/III/4
- Texas Instruments TI-99/4A
- Thomson TO7 / TO7/70 / MO6 (a.k.a. Olivetti Prodest PC128)
- VTech Creativision
- VTech Laser 110 / 200 / 210 (a.k.a. Dick Smith VZ 200 / Texet TX8000 / Salora Fellow)

Are any relevant and *technically feasible* systems still missing in this list?

And shall we group some machines together? Like for example the Tandy systems? (they are technically different machines, as far as I know)

P.S. Dear core authors, I hope that I can speak in the name of all MIST users that we do not "demand" anything from you, but we are endlessly grateful for your work and are looking forward to every new core being developed by you.

It'd be awesome to see the following cores on MiST:
- IBM PC/XT (4.77 MHz 8088 or 8086, maybe with an 8 MHz "Turbo switch") with CGA/EGA/Hercules graphics
- Nintendo SNES
- Sega Genesis / Mega Drive

The ones i'd like to see ranked by my own personal desire and likelihood of being able to have it done {ive included relative notes re feasibility}

- Tandy TRS-80 Model 1 {a lot of the footwork is already done on this, the existing ZX81 core has a trs80 option, so this could be pretty easy to complete}
- Texas Instruments TI-99/4A
- Mattel Intellivision {possibly use Aquarius core as a starter}
- Commodore PET / CBM-II {could be easy to do using the VIC/64 cores as starting points}
- Commodore 128 {could be easy to do using the c64 core as starting point, need a VDC fpga implementation for 80 col mode}
- IBM PC/XT (4.77 MHz 8088 or 8086, maybe with an 8 MHz "Turbo switch") with CGA/EGA/Hercules graphics
- Sega Genesis / Mega Drive {lacking an FPGA sound chip .. so it could be done but w/o audio}
- Commodore 65 {though I dont think the MiST has a good enough FPGA}

though not on your list, enable disk writes for C64 core.. {this might need someone to replicate the 1541 in the core as well, eg its own 6502,rom,ram, as the 1541 disk drive is more or less its own computer!} .. alternatively and I am not sure how it could be done but loose drive compatibility but do more like an SD2IEC type disk drive, .. those devices are ARM based. I dont know which would be easier to implement. Maybe using a "soft" AVR processor core on the FPGA to run the opensource SD2IEC code.. ???? http://hackaday.com/2009/11/19/avr8-vir ... r-on-fpga/

I think you should include improvements to existing cores in your poll as well. There are plenty of more or less easy things to be done.
- Video improvements: 15KHz support, scanlines, hq2x filter...
- a dedicated video submenu in the OSD would be nice too, it would free up space on the first page
- save state for console cores
- tape/disk support where it's missing
- general stability improvements / bug fixes / games compatibility
- oh and the arcade core are really barebone, like, no controller support, no osd, no sound... plenty could be done to improve them
- and am I the only one that cannot even see the OSD on the Atari5200 core ?

My list of most wanted MIST cores:
- Sega Genesis / Mega Drive
- Super Nintendo (SNES)
- IBM PC/XT (4.77 MHz 8088 or 8086, maybe with an 8 MHz "Turbo switch") with CGA/EGA/Hercules graphics
- Sharp X68000

In addition to above, it would be great to see the useful options for common video|audio control via OSD:
- video submenu with 15KHz support, scanlines|filters (from Amiga core), hq2x filter (from NES core) ;
- audio submenu with volume control, high and low frequency control , reverb

Some ideas to improve the firmware:

1. Hotkeys during startup, similar to the minimig_tc64 core:
After reset press immediately and hold down F1 for 31KHz (scandoubled) NTSC, F2 for 31KHz PAL, F3 for 15KHz NTSC (480i) and F4 for 15KHz PAL (576i).

2. Using USB mass storage devices (pendrive, external HDD).

Thanks for your comments, I have added your suggestions to the list above.

Again, this thread is just meant to be a discussion on what new systems should be included in the poll. I plan to make a real poll where you will see the results in a bar chart. Unfortunately, this forum software only allows a maximum number of up to ten poll items, so my plan is to make three or four "prequalifying" rounds and then a final poll to get the overall "winners".

I agree with you that improvements on existing cores are important as well, but this is another topic...

I think we should include existing cores. Otherwise as soon as a core boots and plays a small handful of games, by your criteria you would ask devs to work on something else? Many cores have limited compatibility (e.g. 2600 VCS, NES).

I like the idea of a video submenu for the 8-bit cores in the firmware. The only caveat is that most of the real work will be on the cores themselves. If somebody can look at the HDL I can handle the C... :)

sebdel: the 5200 core and a few others have their own OSD and as a result we can't switch cores or upgrade firmware from them. It would be nice to upgrade them by tighter integration with the MiST, but it's probably lot of work for simple functionality, in the end.

That said... if there is a developer looking for new ideas, how about PC Engine CD and SuperGrafx ;)

I wanted to keep it simple, so I would prefer to first make a poll for new cores only, and then we can make another poll on what improvements to existing cores are most wanted. I assume that this list will be much longer. 15Khz support for more cores would be on the top of my wish list, and a proper video display for the SMS core, and an improved Mac core that supports the later models with color display (or would this be a completely new core for a new system?).

Back to the topic: I'll add SuperGrafx to the list, but I would prefer to leave the PC Engine CD support for the "improvements poll".

Any more suggestions for new systems? If not, then I will soon start the prequalifying rounds...

I suggest to allow three options per user, as most of us have more than just one favourite system. And I would run each poll for 10 days.

You should add arcade cores, but then the list could become huge. There would be a good use of Jotego's work on the YM2151 chip there.

I'd like to see a plain CP/M PC ported, like Grant Searle's Multicomp, explained here:

http://searle.hostei.com/grant/Multicom ... gaCPM.html

and improved here:

https://www.retrobrewcomputers.org/doku ... comp:start

There is already a port emulating at least the Z80 machine with 32kB RAM (using the MiST FPGA internal RAM), but SDRAM interface and SD card usage need to be added.

Also a core for another plain CP/M machine (like the eastern German PC1715) or Schneider Joyce would be fine!

Yes :) also known as Amstrad PCW8512

Fine also would be a Amstrad PCW9512 or
Amstrad PCW16
http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?c=52
http://toastytech.com/guis/pcw.html

there also a CP/M-Version for the PCW16
http://www.seasip.info/Cpm/pcw16.html

but I also would be happy with a PCW8512 with 2 Floppydrives and a RS232/Printer Emulation :)

Another CP/M computer I would love to see CASIO FP-1100

I'd like to see a core i7 with 8 gb ram ;) Those new computers are so damn expensive!

More seriously (?), the Eniac, one of the first computer: http://www.computerhistory.org/revoluti ... puter/4/78
No need to reproduce the usual behaviour though, one of the 18000 tubes failing every day or two...
It was acting a bit like a FPGA btw:
http://histoire.info.online.fr/eniac.html

I see they've remade it on a chip, so why not on fpga. But I don't know if it would be usable.

We need more Japanese machines: PC-80, PC-98, and PC-FX are probably doable.

I think I've found HDL code for PC-8001:

Oh yes, more japanese machines would be really nice. Especially the NEC-series (beginning with the PC-6001 up to PC-98) would be really interesting. They have tons of software available. Most of them unknown outside of Japan, but also much playable titles (like all the shooting games like Touhou 1-5).

As i wrote before another interesting core would be the Memotech MTX512. Here a core for the Altera DE1 already exists so the implementation should be easier than on a complete new development.

Forget PC-FX, it's a very powerful machine. Talking about improvements, PC-Engine core must be improved for being able to play the outstanding Street Fighter II' port or Blazing Lazers (game that gets corrupted after mid first stage).

Jupiter ACE core it's on ZX-UNO, by the way.

I have added your latest suggestions, as well as the Atari 7800 that IMHO would also be nice to have.

About the Eniac: I don't know if it makes sense (or if it is possible at all) to reproduce TTL or tubes with FPGA. I don't know anything about the Eniac on a chip, but probably it reproduces the behaviour of the original Eniac, so FPGAing this chip would mean reproducing this reproduction...

32 entries so far, that would be four qualifying poll rounds, each with eight competitors. Or we can reach 36 with 9, or 40 with 10...

I second X68000 and would definitely like to see more arcade cores, donkey kong etc would be the obvious choices but I wonder if CPS1 would fit on the MIST? That would obviously open up games such as Final Fight, Street Fighter 2, Punisher etc.

To be honest, there are many arcade platforms that support multiple games.
