USB Controllers - Why do so many not work? can we help

Postby Higgy » Tue Jan 31, 2017 8:23 pm

Hello,

As per subject really. I have 4 USB controllers, with only 1 working. They either don't work or even block my USB keyboard from working?

Generic Chinese NES pad - Not working
Generic Chinese SNES pad - Not working
Speedlink Competition Pro - Not working :(
Datel Arcade Stick (has PS3/PC & X360 modes) - works

These controllers work on Raspberry Pi. Is there anything forum members can do to improve the Firmware's compatibility?

Thanks

Are You happy with it?

Best regards,

Hello Goran,

Yes that is the model. It feels a solid unit and there are quite a few buttons. The main fire buttons are not micro switched, but there are upgrade guides if you later want to upgrade components.

Do they show up as joysticks in a Windows machine ? And do they show in the joystick test menu on the MIST at all ?

This is odd. I have a Speedlink Competition Pro USB and it was working. I'll try again.

Do you have anything unusual on your MiST by any chance, e.g. are you using the DC power jack instead of USB?

I believe they show up as joysticks in Windows, I might have only tried the 2 Chinese controllers on a Raspberry Pi.

Nothing unusual in the MiST. Powered by USB phone charger 5V 1A.

Only the Datel Arcade Stick showed 'USB' in the Joystick menu. Everything else just showed 'Atari D-9'. I will do some more tests, wife and baby permitting :D

I actually use one of these competition pro sticks as my primary joystick on the MIST. And it works just fine. I also have a few cheap NES and SNES pads and they also just work fine as you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qCA4O-mI8A

Actually all of the joysticks and gamepads i own do work as expected. It's odd that you seem to have major problems ...

Ah great :( - issues with USB and the Archimedes core :( Why me!

Ok, just in case. - It does not matter which USB port to use? and there is no reason why I should not have a USB Keyboard + USB Mouse + USB Controller plugged in at the same time?

I am using the firmware included with - minimig-mist_1_2_2_beta.zip

I shouldn't make a difference which port you use and how man other devices are connected. But it doesn't hurt to check if e.g. unplugging any of the other devices solves your problem. It seems you _have_ some problem and we need to figure out where it originates from.

And i haven't tested the firmware that comes with the minimig 1.2.2 but i am pretty confident that it doesn't include any USB changes.

Basically any controller compatible with raw USB HID should work. Those that require special drivers or handshake with the devixe (like the XBox ones) won't work. In my experience cheap generic pads and "PS3 compatible" sticks usually use HID.

Just tried my Speedlink Competition Pro and it works just fine. Using fw version 170114.

I just done some more testing.
Controllers work in Windows.
From the sticker underneath, my Competition Pro is a 'SL-6602-TBE'. While plugged into the MiST it even locks up the USB ports so keyboard etc don't work?!
I found another USB controller, a SEGA Saturn chinese clone and most of the buttons on that are registered, apart from A & C!
:(

Just remembered I have a wired PS3 clone.
Does not work :( but when I hot plug it in Joystick config I get USB ....[] appear. Although no buttons are recognised.

My RAP4 VLX works great :D

But be warned: it's a multi standard PS3/PC/XBox stick rather than XBox; don't get XBox only as it will probably not work.(the reason is XBox controllers have an extra chip/encryption so they only work of MS licensed platforms)

I spent an hour testing today.

I did get the SNES and NES pad to be recognised and could test them in the OSD menu.

Unfortunately turning off the MiST and on again i lost the controllers. I could not get them detected again.

It all seems very random if it is going to work or not?
I have used 4 power supplies, 3 screens, 2 keyboards and a whole load of crossed fingers, but it is still no good (also tried different Firmware revisions).

What could be the problem?
