Handheld MiST?

Postby Dal » Thu Mar 23, 2017 9:00 am

Just floating the idea - how feasible would it be to condense the MiST into a handheld form factor complete with a battery, screen and integrated controller?
FireBee, Falcon -Soundpool case: CT63@95Mhz + 14MB/512MB + 16GB SSD + FPU + Phantom 25/50 + SuperVidel + SoundPool FDI + FA8 + ADAT + Eiffel, TT030: 4MB/16MB + Crazy Dots, Mega"SST" 12, STbook, STacy 2, MegaSTE, STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's

Handheld or for me, even better, a MiST laptop :-)

I actually started on this a couple of years ago. MiST with 12" LCD screen, touch overlay, battery and controller. It never got finished though, as I realised that it became much too big to be comfortable to use. Also, controls was a problem. There are so many different controller schemes, it was difficult to find a userfriendly solution to cater for "all" games. E.g. Head over Heels for the MSX use a lot of keys, but totally different keys than e.g. Gradius for the same platform.

A laptop is probably a better solution.

Edit: Early iteration of the prototype :D Here you can see the MIST board, LCD controller, amplifer and speakers and a PicoPSU. I later replaced the PicoPSU with a small switching PSU and a 7.2V 5Ah RC battery.

The controls are the limiting factor here. Clearly not all cores or games would be suitable for portable use - you can forget flight simulators or using GEM / Workbench / etc. However if you integrated a regular SNES / Megadrive type controller along with some control buttons for the MIST, you would be able to play most games for the console cores and any joystick-based games for the computer cores. Something along the lines of the Vega?

Yes, this is not a very difficult project if you can accept limited controls.

The tough part is condensing the board into something much smaller and less power consuming. That's where specialist knowledge is needed.

Not sure if it can be less power consuming. After all, it's just an FPGA, a microcontroller and some RAM. Also, the size isn't a big problem. What would be helpful though is if the MIST could interface directly with the screen. That would save both space and power.
