When did you have your first 16bit Atari?

Postby calimero » Tue Nov 03, 2015 12:05 pm

When did you buy your first 16bit+ Atari (or somebody else buy it for you, or for home use, or gave it as present... :) )?

And please wrote what was the model (ST, MegaST, STe, MegaSTe, Stacy, TT, Falcon...)?

If you only had 8bit Atari and never have 16bit Atari than choose first option in poll, otherwise choose when did you get for first time some 16bit model.

EDIT:

Atari STFM in 1987. Used extensively through university years, and my only computer until around 2000.

Got mine when I was in school, must have been around 88/89 . Saved up for ages for it. Argos had pages of Atari stuff back then, not sure if it even had a Amiga listed at the time. I saw it on offer in some computer shop, so got it like £50 cheaper. Though think about that time most shops were starting to sell off Atari stuff. Long gone are the times to go in a shop and see Atari's stacked to the roof, and the STOS collections plus shelves of games everywhere. I always wanted to do my own games, so I got the Discovery pack as it came with STOS. Also used it a lot for school work, got a citizen dot matrix colour printer next, cost as much as the ST I think. Still have it in the loft I think somewhere. Later saved up for my Falcon.

Ah, good thread. Maybe someone can help me with when it could've been ;)

My _memory_ tells me I bought my first ST in 1986, in Sweden. I think right after the summer. The dealer claimed I was "the third person in the country" - but I find that highly implausible today. It was a small town, and I can't understand why that dealer would've been one of the first to have them.

520STM, with an SF354.

What I don't know: When did the ST go on sale in Sweden? I would trust that more than I trust my own memory ...

Wel I voted for '88, but it must have been earlier, perhaps '87. My parents purchased a 520STFM Super Pack, at the time in the UK for £399.99 if memory serves. So I am guessing Christmas '87 for the Super Pack. Best Christmas present I ever received, but for that I had to sell my Atari 800XL. That wasn't easy, because I remember I swapped my 800XL with my neighbour who worked at a model shop for a Tamiya Frog radio controlled beauty. I had to beg my neighbour to swap the Frog back for my 800XL because I missed it, then begged my parents for an ST, but had to sell the 800XL to help them. Still have the same STFM, upgraded over the years which first was a games machine, then music machine, served me through college using Papyrus and Atari Works. It is still set up to this day now in my little music studio, never once has it been resigned to the loft.

My first PC wasn't until 2004.

However this has got ne thinking about how many packs there were for the ST, and when they were released? I guess I'm talking from a UK perspective. If memory serves there were the following which came in both STFM and STE guise in some instances:

Super Pack
Summer Pack
Explorer Pack
Discovery Pack
Business Pack
Turbo Pack
Power Pack
Family Curriculum Pack
Start Pack
Discovery Extra Pack
Music Pack
Family Curriculum II Pack
Atari Falcon 14mb, 68882, Dual 8gb CF & Steinberg FDI
Atari Jaguar, Rotary controller, Skunkboard & Cat Box
Atari 520STFM 4mb, TOS 2.06 switcher, OverScan, GigaFile, PARCP-USB, Unicorn-USB, System Solutions MiniS HD, SyQuest drives, ICD Link II, PhatBoy MIDI Controller, Philip Rees 5M MIDI merge box, Soundpool M04, Steinberg MIDEX, SMP II, Emagic Log 3, C-Lab Unitor 2, Combiner & Export expanders

I was late to the party having owned an Amiga.

I only got an ST in 1998 having worked at Argonaut with SPAZ of TLB and needing something to preserve all his disks.

Got mine in '87. Bought from a local shop, bundled with a Citizen 120D printer :)
It came with one game, Ranarama, which I played solidly for months until I started swapping disks at school :)

I still have the first ever non-original disks I used too - my first Neochrome disk, Fleet Street Publisher 3 and Defender of the Crown. none of them work anymore, but they are nice to still have :)

I think it was early 1988, a 520STFM with a singled sided disk drive.
In 1989 replaced with a 1040ST with SM124 and and a Philips CM8833 color monitor. Somewhere in 1990 I also bought 2 20MB harddisks

Christmas present '88 for me, a no thrills pack complete with Overlander, Bubble Bobble, Space Harrier and Star Wars as a bundle of games from Evesham Micros, and the five disk pack (no idea what 'pack' this was, seemed to be bundled with all the non Super/ Summer/ Explorer cheapo options) in set with the PD version of Time Bandits on as well as Megaroids and Ripcord - a game with such horrendous use of colours it was unplayable on a TV with a RF cable. Also had an extra pressie of Sidewinder. Didn't get a joystick though so couldn't play half the games until several weeks later, which meant I spent ages trying to imagine what Sidewinder would be like (quite good surprisingly when the Cheetah 125+ arrived)... Not sure whether its just nostalgia but those pack in games are still some of my favourite all time games and in retrospect it was the best Christmas pressie I ever had.

I remember being confused as to why Atari had put some of the stuff on those early pack in disks, there were basic programs that only worked with Rev. 1 ST Basic, and wouldn't work with the revised edition that came with the ST. There was also a spreadsheet demo that barely worked, a midi only music program (great idea without a midi keyboard) and the legendary CPM emulator - which for a 9 year old kid was entirely baffling. I was such a newb to computing at the time - the five pack in disks plus a neochrome demo were mounted on a sheet of cardboard with an Atari branded mousemat the same size over the top. I didn't realise it was for the mouse until about a year later (I thought it was just elaborate packaging)! Doh!

I was actually slightly disappointed initially as I had wanted a Amstrad CPC (double doh!), which one of my friends had. Not disappointed for long though after I'd played Star Wars and heard those samples!

My father bought me my Atari 1040STfm (Spanish version) with a SM125 monitor after I visited my cousins in Germany in 1987, my cousin used Atari computers already. Atari were pratically unknown in Portugal, we could only manage to get a Spanish version. I hate that, prefer English.

The interesting part is that the TOS version is 1.00. I thought that STfm came with at least 1.02. Maybe because is a Spanish version?

It was also repaired (I think they replaced all the electronics, mainboard, PSU and floppy) due to lightning storm that fried several devices at home one time (I think in 89-90, since the floppy was manufactured in 89).
1040STfm (Spanish), SM125 monitor, Megafile 30, 520STe (4MB), 520STfm (XtraRAM 1MB), Mega STe (4MB, 120MB HDD), Mega ST4, TT030 (4MB+64MB, 1.2GB HDD)

I think I first got my 520 STFM in 1986-87, a present from my father. At first games + basic, then later STOS when it appeared and from there 68k.

I got the (2mb) STE a few years later when it was released, and used that to help me get a job in game dev.

After hardworking summer 1990 i was finally able to finance my first own computer: Atari 520STfm with Power Pack, Fighter Bomber and Philips CM8833 monitor. Everyone in my town had either Amiga or C64 so i wanted something different.
I upgraded to STe Turbo Pack in 1995 and finally to second hand Falcon in 1999. Falcon was upgraded to Centurbo II rev b in early 2000's and served as my main computer for years. I finally had to upgrade to Mac when i needed to access modern web sites and make some graphics and DTP work.

At the moment there are three computers on my desk in daily use - 1Mb Atari 520STe, 4Mb Atari Mega STe (both with Lotharek's SD Floppy Emulator) and MacBook laptop running both Mac OS X and WinXP.

Experience in DTP with an ST and Calamus secured my job in 1997 in publishing industry where i still work :)

I got mine (a 1040 STF + SC1224) for Christmas 1987, after a TI99/4A several years before. I used my Atari daily up until 1995, when I switched for a dumb PC.

I still have my Atari, but it needs some maintenance...

I was in work, still living at home so had money to spare then. My first one was from Silica Shop in Spring 1987, 520 STFM with Leaderboard and Starglider as the first games :-)

1986 - 520STFM with SS drive and TOS 1.0, modified fairly quickly to 2.5MB, DS drive and TOS1.4.

For me, it was the happy result of the end of my long and often tearful love affair with Sinclair - when I saw that the QL had Microdrives - always horribly unreliable on the Spectrum - I decided I wasn't going to put up with those any more and instead decided to buy the machine which was being showcased by displaying those (then) awesome location graphics in the text adventure game THE PAWN (Magnetic Scrolls). I had been keeping an eye on the ST for a while but at 400 GBP it was a little bit too expensive for me - then suddenly, there came a rumour that the price was coming down to 300 GBP at WH Smiths, it turned out to be true, and I bought one within a day of the price cut.

I have to admit the first couple of days were difficult - when I turned it on, no BASIC editor or command prompt appeared, so I had no idea how to relate to it or how to begin to programme it, and I wanted to. However, things moved on and I came to love it so much that I got quite proficient at 68000 assembly language and was still using the original ST as my main computer for online communications (ie, bulletin boards), word processing and other productivity and above all, MIDI, for which the ST is even now a machine without parallel, years after everyone else had gone over to DOS and Windows 3.1.

I've still got that first STFM, still used every few days.

I hadn't had the machine long before I bought the Philips RGB CRT monitor I still use with the STs today - wow, what an improvement RGB was over TV RF and composite.

In 2001, working in an electronics workshop, I got talking to one of the other techs who mentioned that he had an Atari 1040 but would rather have a PC, so I went home that evening, built a reasonable PC from spare bits I had lying around, took it into work the next day and offered it in exchange for the ST. The offer was accepted, and when the 1040 was brought in I was stunned to realise that it was not just an ST but a 1040STe. Moreover, it was in beautiful as-new Atari grey condition with no sunburn at all. To keep it that way I mothballed it in a dark loft, where it remained undisturbed for many years.

In 2014 my old faithful PC900 hard drive (circa 1988) or my STFM's DMA port, I couldn't tell which, finally failed, so I dug the STe out from its time capsule and it worked for long enough to show me that the drive didn't work with the STe either, then mysteriously died. (I did subsequently fix that problem on the STe). The HDD problem (with the host interface, not the drive) was solved by reading the drive's contents with a specially bought SCSI card installed in a PC and making an image of it: That image is now on an SD card in my UltraSatan, which has given the STFM and STe another new lease of life.

I love that the ST Chiptune / Demo scene still seems to be alive and kicking thanks to DHS and many others: I spent a considerable amount of time last night just listening to all the tracks on the 'Relix' demo.

i think i got my 520 STFM in 1986 with a single side floppy drev, or i could have been in the early 1987.
i use a TV for the first couple of years then i got a philips monitor
it cost around 6300 dkr, it would be over double in today's money (12600 dkr) or around 1200 English Pound.

my first floppy disk cost 25, Dkr(2.5£)
the first orignal game that i bought was ST karate :)

My grandfather bought me a 520 STe around March 1990. The STe was 10 quid cheaper at 259 because people didn't like the incompatibility. I could have had an A500 instead but picked the ST as all my friends had one. I used it with a black and white TV for ages :) The same machine also got me a job in the games industry. :D I'm glad I got the STe and picked up the Amiga later too. That way I became a huge fan of both machines. We were really lucky to have experienced this time. Best machines ever built, full stop!

1986. I had been using an 800XL since 1982-83 and was positively fired up about
the new ST line coming out. Mail order company called "CDW". Got the 520ST,
SF354, and SC1224 as a bundle with some (not much) software for $999.00
delivered. I think it came with a couple of boxes of blank floppy disks too.

Thought it was a great value then, and still do! :)
