Got my first 520 ST+ (with TOS 1.0 on Disk and the boot ROMs with the disk animation) in '85. In the very same week it became first available in Germany. I remember annoying the dealer every other day after work asking if it had arrived ...

I was kind of similar:

First Atari: Pong when I was born most likely, inherited from my sister
First 8-bit Atari: 800XL in 1984
First 16-bit Atari: 520STFM in 1987
First 32-bit Atari: Falcon in 2012
First 64-bit Atari: Jaguar in 2005
First PC: Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D8830 in 2004

I was late to getting the Falcon, I never had the room and did not want to send the ST to the loft. However I always wanted one so finally managed to get onr for a good prce in 2012.

Looking at my STFM literature, it was 1987 not '88 when it was purchased I did find a copy of the old flyer I drooled over from my local computer shop at the time.

Cannot recal exact year, but i do recal THE EVENT :-)

Folks drove us to nearest town, Barnstaple, i headed straight for 'The Computer shop' (that's what it was called) and picked up a 520STFM Discovery pack and M1 Tank Platoon (Microprose) and a 4-game compilation that had Xenon 2, TV Sports Football, a Rally game etc on it.

I did look at the Amiga, but then saw ALL the games i had with the ST, plus the compilation+original game i'd bought alongside it and thought the ST offered far better VFM.

I'd had an 800XL, loved it, ditto C64, just wanted 'in' to 16 Bit gaming after seeing IK+ and Starglider 2 running on mates older brothers 520STFM and it was a case of which gave more bangs (games) for my bucks :-) (£'s).

Ahh that was it, i bought along with the ST, The Power Pack, Beau Jolly.

Xenon II

TV Sports Football

Lombard RAC Rally and...

Bloodwych.

Now that was superb VFM.

I got my first 520 STF around March 1989. I've added a little expansion RAM some years later, so it's virtually a 1040 STF. I bought the game Barbarian by Psygnosis with it.

And I got a 520 STE with 4 Mb RAM this year.

Apparently it's too early in the morning for me to read... My first Atari was my 800XL (which I very recently figured out how to fix the black and white only issue!), well I guess that's not true, my first Atari was the 2600, but really the question was "When did I get my first 16bit Atari?" that was in '91 if I recall correctly, Atari Mega STe. And a grand thing it was, too bad there wasn't that many STe specific games for it, it could have been something extra special if Atari had known how to market it right.

March 1990, 520STFM with Power Pack, pretty sure it was £299 for the ST and £150 for a crappy JVC TV with only RF as an input! Had that until I bought a 1040STE (one from the last batch of STs made) from Silica in June 1994. £199 I think, plus whatever the RAM cost to bring it up to 2MB. Still got that one.

1988, 520STM and a rather good SCART-equipped Grundig 14" TV. Since then - in chronological order - I've had a 1040STFM, 520STE, Mega STE, Falcon, 520STFM, another 520STE, a TT, three Stacys (bought as a lot for next to nothing), a Mega ST4, Milan060, another 520STE, another Falcon, a Mega ST2 and finally another Mega ST2. I think that's all :) I still got 10 of these, just wish I still had that TT and a working Stacy.

1988 when my older brother had a 1040STfm as a birthday presente.... i counted that one as a gift for me too!

he was 14 years old, i was 11 and it didn´t take me a week to dismantle the whole machine with an ST Format magazine on the side with pictures to guide me... put it back together and it worked for many years... :)

i would say 1990 i got a 520STe which i upgraded to 4MB.... a year or two later a 20MB hard drive for my STe, an Atari SH205 white shoe box.

Atari computers were relatively unknow in Portugal, because at the time people were more into spectrums (cheaper) or expensive PCs...

2016... got a Falcon and the magic begins again... :)
Here i am, the Atari Avenger...
I will bring back Power without the price...
oh, well... not on this planet anymore... :(

November or December 1990.

520STE Turbo Pack from Digicom.
Was either £399 or maybe reduced to like £379, I forget... (will check scanned magazines for ad).

My parents bought it me as my first computer as I had been using and borrowing school BBC's during holidays.

It was always connected to a TV as monitors were too expensive, but my dad had bought me a 14" Sony Trinitron which accepted an RGB input via Scart so the picture was really clear. I ran it at 60Hz iirc.

I found the original receipt for my 520STFM Explorer Pack (with Silica extras pack!) earlier today, bought from Silica Shop on the 3rd April 1989 for the grand sum of £299.00

Still with me complete, working (with Frontier Xtra Ram upgrade) and in its original box! Even has the blue Atari ST mouse mat it came with and my teenage hack up 4 player joystick extension for those hours spent playing Gauntlet 2.

My brother in law gave me my STE about 8 years ago and I got my (non-working) Mega's about a fortnight ago!

Mine was a 520STM with a SF354 in 1988, I sold my C64 to afford the Atari. There were no great bundles in Germany, so all I got was a disk with ST-Basic (that was shortly before Atari Germany switched to Omikron Basic).

Summer of 1988, I sold my ITT brand XT compatible (with 1 meg of memory, dual floppies (5.25 & 3.5 inch), and CGA graphics with CGA monitor for $1000.

I bought a 1040STFM and a 14" Packard Bell MultiSync monitor.

We bought our first ATARI at the ATARI-Fair in Düsseldorf in 1988. It was a 1040 STF with SM124 from Data Becker (a large german hardware reseller, software distributor and publisher of ATARI related books). It cost 1.500 Deutsche Mark which is around 750 EUR (not spending power corrected).

Our First-Day Software was (as I can recall)

- GFA-Basic 2.0 (bundled with the ATARI)
- Public Domain Games like
-- Go-Up
-- Oel Imperium

Good old times ;)

I bought my Atari 520ST the first year it came out, I was waiting for it to hit the stores.
I bought it with the monochrome monitor and used it with a 13" TV for color for a few years before getting the color monitor.

I think I got my 1040 STFM in 1988. It cost over $800 AUD and was second hand from a friend of my fathers. I think the first game I played was Goldrunner, I had upgraded from a VIC20 and the leap in graphics/sound/speed was amazing. I kept using it until about 94-95 when I got a PC.

I bought my Atari 520 STFM back in early 1988. Single sided drive originally, though that was upgraded a bit later on personally with a double-sided drive. I also remember a short while later buying the Xtra-RAM memory upgrade, which took the machine up to 1MB of RAM, then a total of 2.5MB of RAM when the memory chips were swapped over. While the ST itself was purchased at a store in Bedford, UK, called Dowling Computers, the double-sided disc drive was purchased from another location within the same town, hidden up in the backstreets. I forget the name, but they might have been something to do with Power Computing, before they moved out of town completely. Dowling unfortunately went under in early 1993, largely due to the financial crisis which had hit the UK hard during that time (and Bedford itself even harder). The machine itself is still here with me and still works fine, but has an addition of a HXC floppy replacement drive installed, purchased from Lotharek a few years ago at one of the more recent Sillyventure demoparties held in Gdansk, Poland in the last few years.
Atari Falcon x 4 (including a broken one that I need to get fixed), Atari Mega STe (4mb, TOS 2.05), Atari STe (1mb), Atari 4160 STe (4mb, TOS 1.62), Atari STFM (2.5mb), Atari 800xl with Ultimate 1mb upgrade and SIO2SD (a fantastic upgrade, definitely worth it).
Other formats used sometimes as well for necessity's sake :)
