If you had one Atari wish for updated Atari device, what would it be?

Postby AtariSociety » Tue Apr 05, 2016 8:39 pm

I was thinking today, if I had one wish for one past Atari developer to come back and be able to update their hardware/software to something newer, even if that newer tops out at support for Falcon/TT, or maybe even updated to work on next gen Atari that came out or something like the Firebee, what would that wish be?

I was always a big fan of David Small and Spectre GCR and his 68030 upgrades.... I would wish he could come back a short while and updated Spectre GCR to work with newer Mac OS, minimum 7 but preferably into 8 and lastly 9, and have been able to move onto say 68060 upgrades for the Mega/TT/Falcon lines.

One can dream.

I still have a couple GCRs and do spark up System 6.04 every now and then.

If you had one Atari wish for updated Atari device, what would it be?
The DoEveryThingST/STacy/STBook/TT/Falcon plug in cart/just-plug-in-board. It would have IDE/Sata3/VGA/HDMI/UDH/RTC/FD-Replacement/SD/USB3.0/Ethernet/Wi-fi/BT/CD/DVD/BD/Andriod/x86/x64/Mac/StuffHaveNotThoughOf compatibly, for $49.95 + shipping & tax. Perhaps a bit more if the designer and/or builder works over a holiday.
And a few other things, like it would look cool (maybe a sticker or two) with lots of blinking lights, need no additional power, and a waterproof case with a drink cooler/heater.
I'm sure I'm missing something. Yes, now I remember, voice control, with fingerprint ID recognition (need to keep those pesky viruses out)
Oh, and a positional-able flashlight for additional upgrades, as this unit will be obsolete in 2 years, because the Atari 8/16-bit community is AWESOME!!!!!!

A device that can flawlessly and with no lag upscale all ST, TT, and Falcon video modes to common TV and monitor resolutions (including 720p and 1080p, but also 4:3 and 5:4) with optional scanlines, letterboxing, and overscan, and SVGA and HDMI output.

Ha, I own an HTC Vive, I should be able to interface that with my Jaguar, right?

I'll list some things from 'not unless we can sell all our souls to the devil' to 'Possible, but would take a lot of work.'

1) A laptop with modern interfaces, running something like the Apollo core that is in the Vampire from Amiga land. Wifi, gigabit, SATA/PCIe SSD, 4k 30bit color screen, thunderbolt, usb 3.1, etc. All running what TOS should be after almost 30 years of being around. Obviously this wouldn't be just a GEM/TOS compatible system, it'd need to be able to run the original software in as much as it could. Especially if it could 'enhance' the original games, as the PS2 did to the PS1, or most modern emulators do, but better. Some of the AA they apply makes the games look like garbage.

2) I'll agree with the Jag VR, although I have an HTC Vive, it still would be epic to be able to say "I have Atari VR"

3) An up to date Free/Spare/Easy MiNT. Not even sure which project is the most up to date at this point, but when I was looking at the repos, it was really old. Most of the packages seemed to be from the Redhat 8 days.

4) A CT60e for my Falcon. Where is that thing? :P

1. Up to date SpareMiNT with TOSFS in main MiNT repo (not just Helmut's branch) and regular 68000 builds
1. Laptop-like version of MiST which includes flawless upscaler to builtin monitor resolution for all the available cores

Emutos running Native x86 with built-in FX-32! type software emulator that realtime convert 68K code to X86 as well as device drivers for this beast (so you can use the wireless, usb, lighting and whatever poo that comes with modern system).
So we can use modern x86 computer as an Atari stuff.  Really anyone would want to do that??

The thing about x86 is that it has always seemed so 'meh' to me, none of the cool magic of 68k... even saying 'oh-forty' or '0h-sixty' is more awesome than 'ex-eighty six'. Isn't 86'd a slang term for getting kicked out? so ex-86 is like getting kicked out, but eventually accepted? :P

I was thinking today of a 5...
5) New VME boards for Mega STe or TT030. Always wanted a graphic/nic card for mine.

I still need to decide if it's better to get an eeprom burner to get TOS 3.06, or just buy it from somewhere. I'd potentially use the burner for other things too though...

I agree with the above about a MiST in laptop form, I started another thread about that...

Don't like X86, no issues.
Just replace x86 with RaPi, ARM or MediaTek or what sh*tty CPU of the modern era.

I would be happy connecting to my Atari a modern printer USB and to return to stamp with all the programs.

I wonder how feasible it'd be to create a Raspberry Pi print server with something like a parallel to USB connection to emulate an Atari Laserjet.

I think it is feasible, as there was a small mentioned back in 2011 viewtopic.php?f=3&t=22152&hilit=usb+printer+port

There is also the google cloud printing that someone wrote... oh yeah that was YOU!!! :P

I haven't tried it yet, but my new HP Laserjet supports google cloud print. I do like the idea of using a raspberry pi as a print server for older systems though. Granted for the Amiga there is a netprinter driver I had working at one point. USB printing is terrible, Wireless or network printing rules.

An Atari with 68080 and SuperVidel, 3Daccelerator-enhanced - or capable of using PCIe graphics from nVidia/AMD, having Ethernet, USB, ROM-Port (for Cubase Dongle), massively accelerated DSP, ... mainboard with standard formfactor which fits niceley in widely available small PC chassis. And a notebook based on that.

I don't care about the model of the engine as far as it runs fast and access modern hardwares.

Network printing without that mentioned program above is also on my TODO list, like below the USB printing.... unfortunately the two are not right on top, and most unfortunate is the top item on the TODO list is yet to be started. I guess if it is started it wouldn't be in the todo.

My top todo list as far as my Atari's go is to get my Falcon working in 800x600@256 colors so I can play around with Calamus SL 2015...

Second would be get it to print!

Actually a nice wish list would be drivers and a hub/switch for the stinking LAN port on the Atari's that I have to actually be useful. Would be cool to build something like a raspberry Pi as a mini router to connect to the apple-talk/localtalk stuff and translate it to TCP/IP.

I could network all my Atari's (except the 1040STf) without having to buy more NetUSBees ( haven't gotten one for the TT030 and Mega STe yet)

@Leech:

Calamus 2015 on Falcon with 800x600 isn't the big burner, I have it running. Better on TT. I have it there, but if you have seen it on PC/Mac... Ok, it's fun to have.

Printing: Still possible to get parallel port printers, not new but in good condition. Anyhow CosmosEx ATARI SLM emulation would be nice.

LAN-Port on M-STE/TT/Falcon: This one is even slower than NetUSBee, because it's only a RS422 interface

Consider CosmosEx, the most important LAN functionallity there, accessing network drives in translated mode works very nice.
