New toy!

Postby joska » Fri Jan 06, 2017 10:50 pm

Got myself a 3D printer today :) I've wanted one for ages, but now they are cheap enough to buy as a toy. I bought a Flashforge Finder for around €500.

I don't know anything about 3D modelling and 3D printing, so I started with some simple stuff:

2017-01-06 23.33.00.jpg

2017-01-06 23.32.31.jpg

This is a case for my Hydra ethernet cartridge. The first attempt got warped and I got some dimensions wrong, this is my second attempt and I'm quite pleased with it :) It snaps together, no glue or screws needed.

Not sure what my next project will be, but it will probably be something Atari related.

Very nice!

I've been meaning to get one for over a year now as there's so much potential use for one re retro computers...

Amazing stuff. Does it look like the materials needed are going to be very expensive?

Very nice! Was it purchased at Clas Ohlson by any chance? I know we are selling this exact model at work anyway :)

I am also quite curious what software you are using to produce the 3d-model - both for work demonstrating purposes at work, and also for possibilities to do (like you) fun stuff ;)

Could you share 3D file?
I believe there are many atarians that need case for hydra...

I'm printing with a biodegradable plastic called PLA. It's more than strong enough for stuff like this, but not flexible like ABS. I will try other materials later.

DarkLord wrote:Does it look like the materials needed are going to be very expensive?

No, the filament is rather cheap. Around €15 for a 600g filament roll. That's around 200 metres, I used 4 metres for this case.

GokMasE wrote:Very nice! Was it purchased at Clas Ohlson by any chance? I know we are selling this exact model at work anyway

Yes, Clas Ohlson :)

GokMasE wrote:I am also quite curious what software you are using to produce the 3d-model - both for work demonstrating purposes at work, and also for possibilities to do (like you) fun stuff

I'm using SketchUp with the STL export module for modelling, and the Flashforge software to generate the gx files.

Sure. I will share it when it's finished, I need to add some support to avoid stressing the ROM-port.

Here it is. I had to use the "raft"-option when printing to avoid warping.

There's three pieces, upper and lower case, and a stand that you glue to the bottom case.

Hydra cartridge.zip

Please note that I don't know anything about 3D modelling, so the model may be completely "wrong". But the result is as intended.

Can you print copy of it self with it ? That would be pretty useful, and I'll pay you 300 Euros for :-)

Hehe! In that case I'd have a printed copy myself, a friend of mine bought the same printer about a month ago.

Thanks! Yes, that's for the status-LEDs. It's not obvious from the photos but the slot is shaped like the ST LEDs, I intend to fill it with transparent hotglue to make it look a little bit more like the real thing.

BoNuS wrote:Doe it come with software the printer and easy to use ?

It comes with printing/slicing-software which is very easy to use. There's even a Linux-version. I had absolutely no problems getting started, both the software and the printer itself is very easy to use.

There is no CAD/modelling software included though, you need to provide that yourself. I'm using SketchUp since there's a free version and it seems to be the most easy to use program for newbies like myself. Unfortunately I couldn't get SketchUp to work properly under Wine, and when I tested it in a virtual machine with Windows it was too slow as my PC is rather underpowered. So I'm using my office laptop (Lenovo Yoga) for modelling for now.

Biodegradable plastic ?
Does that mean you cannot leave it under sunshine else it will start to degenerate ?

€15 for 200 metres means that box cost you less than 50 EUR cents... wow that is really cheap.
( of course start up cost of € 500 not counted).
I had the impression that 3D printing is rather expensive, looks like it is not.

Thanks for the files.
I too use SketchUp for my 3D modeling as it's indeed the easiest one to learn. I print using ABS on a SoliDoodle 2.
3D printing is really useful for things like this.
Now to print new Atari case we would need something a lot bigger :) .. something like these :

If you're interested in designing more complicated 3D stuff, you might consider FreeCAD (http://www.freecadweb.org/). Free, open-source, parametric 3D modelling software with lots of possibilities. Including 2D drawing generator, FEM calculation, and much more. Runs on Linux and Windows, is under slow but continuous development, and has a lot of potential. I'd recommend some tutoring videos on YouTube, though, as for the inexperienced beginner it's not that obvious as to where to start.

My starting point is to use the part design module, draw a sketch in the X-Y-plane, pad the sketch and go from there. But that's getting way off topic here, there's a lively forum for FreeCAD on http://forum.freecadweb.org/index.php

I looked at freecad.. indeed not intuitive :)
I also looked at Fusion 360, that too requires some time spent on tutorials.
There are more and more free tools out there. I'm starting to run into SketchUp limitations for some of my things so it might be time to invest time learning a new tool.

I don't believe sunshine is a problem. But PLA doesn't like high temperatures.
