For sale: Replacement capacitors for Falcon030 motherboard.

Postby dhedberg » Mon Feb 27, 2017 9:40 pm

Hi,

I just replaced all electrolytic capacitors of my Falcon030 motherboard. As I ordered more capacitors than needed I have one extra complete set for sale.
These are top quality, low ESR, high ripple current, Panasonic capacitors. For 1uF, 2.2uF and 3.3uF I used Panasonic ECQ-E(F) series film capacitors. For everything from 4.7uF and up I used Panasonic FR series capacitors.
They were all purchased less than 2 weeks ago from Digi-Key and Farnell.

The complete list is as follows (note that this is for the motherboard, not including any PSU capacitors).

Panasonic ECQ-E(F) series film capacitors
3 pcs 1uF 50V radial (replacing 1uF 50V axial electrolytic)
1 pcs 2.2uF 50V radial (replacing 2.2uF 50V axial electrolytic)
2 pcs 3.3uF 50V radial (replacing 3.3uF 50V axial electrolytic)

Panasonic FR series electrolytic capacitors
3 pcs 4.7uF 50V radial (replacing 4.7uF 25V axial)
4 pcs 10uF 50V radial (replacing 10uF 50V axial)
1 pcs 22uF 50V radial (replacing 22uF 16V axial)
6 pcs 47uF 25V radial (replacing 47uF 16V axial)
4 pcs 100uF 16V radial (replacing 100uF 16V axial)
1 pcs 220uF 6.3V radial (replacing 220uF 6.3V radial)
2 pcs 220uF 16V radial (replacing 220uF 16V axial)
1 pcs 470uF 35V radial (replacing 470uF 35V axial)
1 pcs 4700uF 16V radial (replacing 4700uF 16V axial)

I'm selling these for 35 Euro (PayPal only), including shipping (non-insured by air). Any PayPal fees paid by the buyer. This is pretty close to what I paid for the capacitors. Let me know if you're interested.

As an owner of 2 Falcons: Is that really neccessary? Are there any known incidents where capacitors on Falcon gone blow up, like in Amiga 600/1200/4000? (I have A1200 as well and there I did the replacement.)

Capacitors are considered to be faulty when capacitance drops by 20-25% of initial value.
Also electrolytic capacitors have a limited lifespan, which is around 15years (or 1000-10.000working hours).
Falcons came out in 1992, so....

I had a board where the cap near the fdd connector leaked and damaged the track.

I'm not saying it is necessary to do it right now but there is a reason behind it. The chance of failure is significantly higher over their lifespan. If your falcon starts flying sideways this could be something consider to do.

Same story with the elcos in the psu.

But my Falcons have not been powered up often during their lifetime. They are not used every day.

I know well the theory about capacitors, on PC side I think had to do with this topic more than you can imagine. On Amiga, Commodore used some capacitor brands which were well known for lower quality, like on those PC mainboard I had to do with in thq 90's and 2000's. Those in Falcon (and general STs), no idea if they also were those chinese faked things...

I have looked a lot into this as I also was interested in recapping my Falcon.
First I would like to say that the more you use the computer the longer life of the capacitors.
It's not good for them to not be used for longer periods.
I have a spare Falcon board and I measured the F and ESR on all of them. I was surprised how good they
were after all these years. Also the ESR was really low on even the smallest capacitors, which is a proof
for really good quality. Of course they will get bad some day and you never know when, so it could be
a good idea to change them in advance. The biggest problem is to find good quality, low ESR axial
capacitors today, most is radial. For me it's important that it looks good if I change them, so for me I
can't replace axial with radial.

I was afraid of this as well, but when I was done I was very satisfied with the look of the radial ones. I attached a picture of the upper right part of the motherboard in which I replaced a total of 13 capacitors.
Also, believe me. I did quite some research on axial capacitors and eventually I did find Vishay axial capacitors with very low ESR values, but the cost of them were pretty ridiculous and on top of that a few of them were longer than the ones fitted in the Falcon030 so they would have looked pretty crappy in place.

That was very nice done with isolation on the legs!
I must say that this looks great, even with radial.
I have looked at Vishay also and they seems to be good quality, but on the
smallest capacitors it's quite high ESR compared to the originals in the Falcon.

After posting the set of capacitors to Mikro and counting the remaining capacitors I figured that I actually still have enough left for one more set but with one change. I'm out of the Panasonic ECQ-E(F) series film capacitors but I can offer Panasonic FC series electrolytic capacitors instead. With this change, the total price come down to 28 Euro including shipping (non-insured by air). Any PayPal fees paid by the buyer. Let me know if you're interested. This is the last set for sure.

Panasonic FC series film capacitors
3 pcs 1uF 100V radial (replacing 1uF 50V axial)
1 pcs 2.2uF 50V radial (replacing 2.2uF 50V axial)
2 pcs 3.3uF 50V radial (replacing 3.3uF 50V axial)

Panasonic FR series electrolytic capacitors
3 pcs 4.7uF 50V radial (replacing 4.7uF 25V axial)
4 pcs 10uF 50V radial (replacing 10uF 50V axial)
1 pcs 22uF 50V radial (replacing 22uF 16V axial)
6 pcs 47uF 25V radial (replacing 47uF 16V axial)
4 pcs 100uF 16V radial (replacing 100uF 16V axial)
1 pcs 220uF 6.3V radial (replacing 220uF 6.3V radial)
2 pcs 220uF 16V radial (replacing 220uF 16V axial)
1 pcs 470uF 35V radial (replacing 470uF 35V axial)
1 pcs 4700uF 16V radial (replacing 4700uF 16V axial)

By the way! I recommend to open your Falcon up and double check all your caps after a few weeks. I did this and found that the 470uf cap near the modulator was starting to bulge, so I re-ordered and fitted a new one again. Hopefully it was just a faulty part. But still a good lesson, I'm glad I checked :)

Oh, scary... I guess I'll have to open it up again and check in a few weeks to make sure everything looks OK.
