Software: Coma

Son Shu Shi

What an accomplishment this game is. Created with such a small team, the result is really amazing. The game oozes creative passion. While the gameplay is really well balanced, it is a tough cookie, very hard from time to time with its moments of sheer frustration. As of level 3, timing becomes key. You will need to practice and learn the levels to complete this game, there are so many bad guys on screen it sometimes gets a bit hard to take.

Graphically, it's also nice on the eyes with well-defined graphics and animation. You really get the feeling that the developers put some thought and love into the game. Remember what I said about the large levels? Well these are wonderful and are very different to each other, they also scroll fairly smooth in all four directions.

Cybernoid - The Fighting Machine

When you boot up the game you’re presented with a fantastic loading picture of your ship. It's detailed with bold colours and it tells you This is 16-bit, bitch. Then you get the wonderful rendition of the Cybernoid theme that's on all the 8-bit versions. It's not exact but the changes still make it noticeable to anyone who knows it.

Did you know?

Rumours say the operating system of the ST, called TOS, is short for "Tramiel Operating System".

Coma (Utility) is present on 1 menudisk.

You take on the role of a ladybird that has been kitted out with a gun and shield. Your job is to blow away the bugs that are crawling toward you while avoiding the others that litter the playfield. The action takes place on a single static screen, and you can move your ladybird around in all 4 directions, except pushing up makes you fly, which is a really nice touch and allows you to quickly move away from swarms of bugs on the later levels.

Across the top of the screen, a 'mothership' style bug moves back and forth. Hit this for various power-ups, including speed boosts and shields. You get plenty of lives, but if you lose just a single one, it sends you back a whole 6 levels! Which is extremely frustrating. On level 8, you'll encounter the first boss, which is pretty easy to deal with as it doesn't move that fast, but be careful because when it fires, it's hard to spot the bullets.

It's quite a playable little game, very reminiscent of PD offerings at the time. The graphics are cute, and your ladybird is well-animated, although the color cycling becomes a little much. There are loads of sampled sound effects that add a lot to the game (although also slow it down, too!) and it feels heavily inspired by Llamatron in this respect.

All in all, not a bad offering.

Was this game ever actually released? I only saw a demo and have never come across the full game, which is a shame as it has a lot of potential.

Pretty sure this game was never actually released. Only a rolling screenshot demo was ever distributed.

Shame. The music was pretty awesome for the ST.

Hello, I'm the author of the graphics of Lupo Alberto the Videogame for all the platforms. The game is based on the strips of the very famous italian comics charachter Lupo Alberto. The Videogame was officially released in November 1990 for Amiga and Commodore 64. Even if the Atari ST version was almost complete, it wasn't released due to the poor Atari ST market share in Italy. In 2015, for the 25th anniversary of the official release, I shared the ST version for the Atari community. Enjoy!

I just spent a couple of hours playing this highly enjoyable little trading game. I admit, I played it on Beginners mode and ended up winning with $3.8 million in the bank! But it was still fun and I'd happily play it again on Normal mode. It's a little random, of course, with regard to the pricing and events but as there was never an official version of Taipan for the ST, this more than makes up for that.

This is actually a really nice early ST game. I remember it was one of the first I ever heard with sampled speech: "Floyd the Droid ... onna run" Felt like an 8-bit game with super chunky sprites, but fast and furious.
